Active Radiation Shielding

An active shielding system is used to reduce magnetic field levels (radiation) in the project area from external sources such as overhead power lines.

The main goal of an active protection system is to ensure that radiation levels do not exceed desired magnetic field levels both in the steady state and in varying consumption states of nearby electric power lines.

A common example is an overhead power line, near a residential or office building which creates magnetic field higher than recommended by the authorities (levels - the Ministry of Environmental Protection) in areas where people are continuously present.

How does an active protection system work?

An active shielding system is made of an electrical circuit, designed to produce an opposite magnetic field to the magnetic field that one wishes to reduce. Thus, in the area desired for reduction, the magnetic field levels will drop to the defined target levels.

The system consists of one or more electrical loops which can be installed on poles or supports extending from the structure or even can be partially or fully concealed in the ground or implemented in the structure. The loops are usually installed parallel to the field source, between the shielded area and the magnetic field source.

The magnetic field probe will be installed in such a way that at any given moment the magnetic field levels will be monitored, and in accordance with the analyzed data from the probe, the magnetic field produced by the system will adjust to optimize the total magnetic field levels in the shielded area in order to meet the target values at all times.

At any given moment, the customer can view, download and save the measured values.

An active protection system for reducing magnetic field levels from power lines is known and approved for implementation by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
